YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Steps Down After Nine Years — Business d’Or

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki is stepping down after nine years.

In her blog, she said, “I’ve decided to start a new chapter in a family, health and personal project that I am passionate about.”

Neil Mohan, Chief Product Officer of YouTube, becomes Head of Google’s Video Platform.

Ms. “This is the right time for me and I think I can do it because I have a great YouTube leadership team,” said Wojcicki.

Wojcicki added that she would continue working at YouTube “in the short term” to “support Neil and help with his transition”.

In her blog, she praised Mr Mohan’s work launching YouTube TV, as well as leading YouTube Music, Premium, and Shorts.

At the invitation of Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google’s parent firm, Alphabet, Ms Wojcicki confirmed she would to “take on an advisory role across Google and Alphabet”.

“This will allow me to call on my different experiences over the years to offer counsel and guidance across Google and the portfolio of Alphabet companies,” she said.

Legacy:

Ms Wojcicki became involved with Google when the founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, set up shop in the garage of her home in Silicon Valley in 1998, becoming the company’s first marketing manager a year later.

A Google employee for nearly 25 years, she was among the first 20 employees at the tech giant — listed at number 16.

During her time at YouTube, Mr. Wojcicki faced public criticism for the way the platform handles content, spreads disinformation, and constantly worries about children’s privacy.

Fact-checking organizations around the world say YouTube isn’t doing enough to prevent the spread of disinformation on its platform.

When she joined the online video platform in 2014, she had just passed one billion users. Today, with 2.5 billion users worldwide, many YouTube creators, also known as YouTubers, are making lucrative careers on their channels. Jimmy Donaldson, better known as Mr Beast, was YouTube’s highest-earning content creator last year.

The young American made £45 million in gross revenue in 2022, more than any YouTube creator in the history of the platform — according to recent estimates by Forbes magazine.

Ms Wojcicki is the latest in a series of high-profile tech executives to leave long-standing roles.

Her departure follows Jeff Bezos, who resigned as CEO of Amazon in 2021, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg stepping down in 2022 and Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, who left the company last year as part of a shake-up instigated by new boss Elon Musk.
